Steve Ikeda has been working on catching more browns this year. I stopped by today and asked where are the pics. He said he had them on his phone but hadn’t figured out how to get them off. I have had this same problem. Actually pretty much all of us seniors seem to have problems with ever changing phones and technologies. Luckily my 8 year old grandson show me how to send the phone pics to my e-mail address so I showed Steve.

So please find pics of Steve’s two large brown’s courtesy of my grandson’s teaching me how to down pics from the phone.

Grey Eagle Bar (GEB) is the long bar of cobbles that is located about a quarter mile below the lake. The main river runs along the north side of GEB. There is also a small side channel 100 CFS that runs along the south side of GEB. There is a rope tied across the side channel to help you access upper & lower GEB pools. At the top of GEB there is a wide expanse of shallow water (pic 4) that splits, as indicated above, around GEB.

The main river at the top of GEB has a strong fast flow due to the river narrowing (pic 2 /3). After a series of fast riffles there is a deep pool which we named upper pool at GEB. It is deep and fast. Lots of big/strong 18” + that make long runs with lots of aerials are in this pool. You have to go deep with big flies to get them interested. On occasion they will hit the small bottom fly when nymphing. I usually have my indicator & 3 BB’s set at about 12’ to 15’ or more. There is a huge boulder about 10’ (pic 1) above this pool. This area is very dangerous due to steep banks and fast/deep water. Getting down to river level is tricky and you should be very careful and wear a flotation device. Wet wadding is recommended for safety reasons. Wader belt is a must and a second is recommended. Cast upstream as far as possible to allow your flies to get deep.

Flies: 8-12 rubber leg centipedes, crawdads, Bottom flies, 14-18 PT’s, Prince Nymphs, copper Johns.

Sinking lines use Sculpins, wooly bugger. Strip short fast strokes without stopping.

I went up to the club and arrived around 6:00 ready to jump right in. I was on the water in 5 minutes casting my Teeny 200 sinking line with a large #2 streamer with a trailing PT. The flows were around 300CFS. Access was very easy. I started casting at the head of the pool behind the boxcar. Unfortunately, I started picking up all sorts of junk off the bottom. Since I had rigged three rods as I indicated previously, I gave up on this quickly.

Fish were rising up and down the pool. My casting wasn’t up to par as the three month layoff and weak hand & arm made me look inapt. The wind was blowing toward the downstream so casting into the wind was not easy. I had a 15 foot 3X leader with about six feet of tippet. I had on a # 12 Tarantula & 16 BWO Gray. My luck the BWO’s on the water were somewhat greenish and size 18. I shook the branch of a willow and flies landed in the water so I could make sure what they were eating. I didn’t have a fly to match. I wasn’t having any luck getting them to hit the Gray BWO so I went up stream in the faster water. Bang Bang Bang. Three nice rainbows around 14” each. Great fighters with lots of aerials.

They hit both the 12 tarantula and the 16 Gray BWO. John came down and the fish stopped hitting. After John left I picked up the 11’ 5wt switch rod and started casting at the top of the run. Hooked up two nice fish but could not keep them on very long. The rod was more than I could handle with the weak hand and wrist. All in all it was a great hour and a half of fishing. The weather and water was perfect.

If you haven’t noticed PCWA generally lowers the flows Sunday afternoon because they don’t like to generate power on Sundays. They also don’t have enough water in Oxbow to keep the flows high and also have enough water the next day for the rafters. If you like fishing the lower flows, late Sunday afternoons is the time to go fishing.
This avoids wasting time getting rigged. You are not fishing if your fly is not in the water. I also wet wade, which saves a whole lot of time, is safer and also keeps me cool. I have been using the Orvis low top wading shoes with felt sole. I don’t use their insert. I use the Simms as it is easier to put on and also keeps me dry to the knee. I generally don’t wade very deep because I don’t feel the need.

I tend to carry two rods when fishing. It’s not that difficult and allows you to change from nymphing to dry instantly. I have carried three on rare occasions but it is a bit of a chore. It depends when I am fishing. I don’t carry three rods if I am hiking downstream. Of course having the third rod ready in your car is a good alternative.

DRY FLY:
My old standby Sage XP with a Sharkskin line is my “go to” dry fly rod. The sharkskin line adds about 10’ to 15’ in distance and floats like an indicator. I almost always use two dry flies. I like the large 10 -12 tarantula and stimulators this time of the year as my top fly. Terrestrials also work well. The second fly which is difficult for me to see ( 18” to 24” off the back of the first Fly) is usually a 16-18 BWO, PMD, Parachute Adams and sometimes a small caddis. I like to shake a branch of a nearby tree to see what’s around.

NYMPHING:
For nymphing I use my Sage Switch Rod 11’ 5wt. Last year I used the Rio steelhead 8wt line. You could roll cast a small anchor with this line. You can also send out a mend 30+ feet without much effort. I have sent out mends 50+ feet. I get incredibly long drifts with this setup. I tend to rig this rod for deep water. Nine to twelve foot 3X fluorocarbon leader, 3’ to 4’ of 4X fluorocarbon Tippet. I love the Thingamabobber indicators because they are easy to see, have little air resistance and the can hold up that small anchor if you use the large size. I like the large centipede and other rubber legged nymphs as the top fly. 18” off the back of this fly I like, 16-18 PT’s, Micro May, Prince Nymphs, Copper Johns, Bird of Prey and a whole assortment of small nymphs. Turn over a rock and see what the fish are eating. I have been wanting to pick up a net to catch what floats out after turning over the rock. Lastly the weight. If it’s deep 3 BB’s are my go to weight. I have two methods of putting on the weight. The first is just above the knot between the leader & tippet. This keeps it from sliding down to the fly. The second is to tie about 6” to 12” of 5X or 6X tippet off the bottom fly with a knot at the end. I add the BB’s above the knot. This way gets the line down fast and also helps avoid getting snagged on the bottom. If the BBs get stuck it’s easy to break them off and add more. I do not have a clear preference in which to use.

SINKING LINES:
My third rod is either my 6wt Sage Z Axis or the 5wt I built with Larry Lee a friend and local rod builder. I like the Teeny 200 up to about 15’ deep in slow to moderate flows. Below that I use the Deep 7 to get down quickly and in fast water. I use Sculpins, Wooly Buggers and Streamers. This year I am going to use much larger streams for two reasons. The first is that we have had members catch 12+” rainbows that were attacked by huge browns. The second is that monster brown I sent recently was caught on a fly that was described as “needing a hard hat” to fish safely.

If any of you would like to share your methods or tips please send them to me and I will publish them under your name.

I hope this helps your fishing.
