Horseshoe Bar Fish and Game Preserve is located near Forest Hill, California on the Middle Fork of the American River just below Oxbow/Ralston Dam.  Just one hour from Sacramento or two hours from the Bay Area, Horseshoe Bar offers true wilderness fly-fishing in this thousands of acres preserve in the American River Canyon Watershed.

Membership:  Horseshoe Bar Preserve has a limited membership that promotes a true wilderness fly fishing experience, as well as the camaraderie of a close knit group of members.  Members are eager to help one another improve their skills and knowledge of the river. We offer a number of events and seminars throughout the year to help you fine tune your fly fishing skills, as well as social events where members can become acquainted and share experiences.  After a long day of angling, you can return to the campground overlooking one of the most beautiful and productive sections of the river to share your experience with fellow members.  After cooking up your favorite foods in the outdoor kitchen you can sit around the campfire and enjoy the pristine beauty and tranquility that is Horseshoe Bar Preserve.

The River: Horseshoe Bar Preserve is open to fishing year around. Cold clear water is supplied by snow runoff from French Meadows and Hell Hole Reservoirs through a tunnel system daily and is approximately 52 degrees throughout the summer months.   Members regularly enjoy the challenge of hooking up with 14” to 18” native fish.  Occasionally they hook a 20” to 24” fish that takes them well into their backing with several long runs and spirited aerials.   Hatches are numerous and include BWOs, caddis, October caddis, Golden Stones and Yellow Sally’s to mention a few. The five miles of river has many great runs of deep holes, big tailouts, pocket water, and perfect seams that hold lots of wild trout.

The tunnel was dug by miners early in the last century to reroute the river

We have a limited membership of fly fishers who enjoy this pristine, gated preserve.  Our mission is to preserve this property in its natural state for the enjoyment of our members and guests.
